Jacket Flap

I got an email yesterday from my editor requesting that I remove the original plot outline of This World We Live In from this blog, for fear that people would feel it wasn't necessary to read the book if they'd already read the outline. An excess of spoilering.

Personally, I love being spoilered, but out of respect for my publishing house, I make the original entry on this blog vanish. It's good to have power.

Within an hour of making the entry go away, I got an email from someone asking me what the plotline to TW was. I informed my editor of this fabulous coincidence, and she suggested emailing back the jacket flap copy. Which I did.

So here, for anyone else who is interested, is what will be on the front jacket flap of This World We Live In. Think of it as socially acceptable spoilering.

The heart-wrenching companion to the bestselling novels Life as We Knew It and The Dead and the Gone.

It's been a year since a meteor collided with the moon, catastrophically altering the earth’s climate. For Miranda Evans life as she knew it no longer exists. Her friends and neighbors are dead, the landscape is frozen, and food is increasingly scarce.

Miranda and her two brothers spend their days scavenging for food and household items, while their mother stays at home and desperately tries to hold on to the ordinary activities of their previous life. But they all know that nothing is truly normal in this surreal new world they live in.

The struggle to survive intensifies when Miranda’s father and stepmother arrive with a baby and three strangers in tow. One of the newcomers is Alex Morales, and as Miranda’s complicated feelings for him turn to love, his plans for his future thwart their relationship.

Then a devastating tornado hits the town of Howell, and Miranda makes a decision that will change their lives forever.

  1. I think you should inform your editor it is going to take much more than spoilers to stop people from wanting to read This World We Live In! I have read LAWKI and D&G numerous times and plan to do the same with B3!

  3. You are the best author in the world. I hope someday the whole world will know you're famous name. Your books moved me and are the best books I have ever read. I am barely able to survive the suspense of waiting to find out what happens when my two most favourite characters of all time meet. Miranda and Alex help create the best book ever and I can't wait for April when I quiver as I read the first to last page of this book.
    I LOVE YOU,
    Stephanie. M. :)

  6. Wow. Combining plot lines from the two other novels has to be incredibly complex, explaining how Alex ends up with Miranda's family. I'm hoping you'll explain what's happening in the world, because while I love how you manage the stories of Miranda and Alex, I like to know more about how civilization reacts to the "surreal new world" and what is going on elsewhere. I have to applaud you on your ability to write these amazing novels. To bad I lost "Life As We Knew It." It is such a great book.

  8. Hm. I don't know if I'll read d&g or this next book. I kind of want to keep the ending open. Why? Well, I read the Tomorrow Series by James Marsden, and it was great, but then I read While I Live. And let me tell you, it closed up the opening real fast, withing, like, the first ten pages. So. I can't read the last Tomorrow book without thinking of What Happens Next. With all caps. So...I'll have to think about it.

  12. I just finished Book 3.
Of the new characters: I liked Syl best and want to find out more of her 'back story': it seems as if even in an interesting time she's lived an unusually interesting life.

Wondering whether Laura, Miranda's mom, has been keeping a diary too? This possibility is never mentioned: but she IS a writer.

I noticed that Gabriel was born on Christmas day while his parents were on a journey. Wondering what this means.

I like the fact that there was always a thread of hope in this book even when very bad things happen.

Wondering what will happen to the world later on/will the volcanoes ever stop/will the global cooling ever end? It seems though as if there is a short but present growing season if the plants/animals can adapt: maybe Pennsylvania now has a climate like Alaska/the ARctic, and there ARE people who have traditionally survived mostly on a diet of fish.
I want to read book 4!!!!!
I'm not even a kid: I'm 52 and a long term science fiction reader: I don't buy every science fiction book i see; I am picky. And I don't buy every sequel I see. Tell the publisher there's a market. I am hooked on this series, and there have to be more stories to tell maybe from the point of view of other characters too.

  13. Hi Laurie (aka harmony1)-

Thank you for your comment and for leaving a review over at Amazon. I appreciate both.

It never occurred to me that Mom might also keep a diary. I've never been able to myself, but there are writers who do, and Mom, especially after the moon crash, might think that these were times that should be recorded.

On the other hand, she might feel that Miranda's journal is record enough for one family.

I really doubt there'll be any more books, so I guess all your questions will have to be answered by you. You'll probably do a better job of it than I would anyway!

  15. I finished reading the third book today. I loved it, it made me cry, just like the last two,and as well as the last two, I was completely drawn into the story, mistaking it with real life at points.

As much as I loved it, I found it incredibly difficult to believe that Miranda would be capable of keeping such a detailed diary, especially of the conversations had during the day. Also, I found the ending lacking any closure, things just seemed to get worse for them than better.

It seemed pretty clear that there would be no more books but I cant help but hope there may be another written in the form of the writing from Dead and Gone. I would love to find out what happened with the world, as well as the main characters, and if things ever turn around and get better.

Thank you for writing such wonderful books and I hope to hear more from you in the future.

  16. I have read all three books and was surprisingly hooked. The first two books were amazing, and then I began to read the third. I was upset that the ending was so bleak and un-telling. Yes, it leaves much for the reader to ponder for the next book, but you've made it very clear that there are only going to be three books. So, why leave it with such a cliff hanger?
    Quite frankly I'm disappointed.

  19. I could not love these books more. I've read each of them several times, and never get tired of them. If someone asked which was my favorite, I'd break into tears because I could never decide.I really wish there would be a fourth book in this series.

  22. "This World We Live In" was just as amazing as "D&G" and "LAWKI"! I started to read "TWWLI" last night and couldn't put it down! I read from 10PM to 3 in the morning! I love the 3 books so much, they're my new favorites! (Even more than the Twilight Saga, for I once was a huge fan!) Amazing job! Although, I'm still praying that there would be a fourth book! (That would be a miracle!) Like what one of the previous Anonymous said, "you've made it very clear that there are only going to be three books." The ending depressed me a bit, but it's still AMAZING! <3 Miranda+Alex!!
